And answer to your question - I most start with a sketch, and then work at the parts I like best in the beginning. Which most of times happens to be the eyes.
But I can't focus on the same spot 'til it's done, I move on and get back later.
Cool, cheers - I never know where to start, I am trying to teach myself to draw in my spare time (so far progress is slow). I get tech drawing, but sketching for drawing people or scenes has always been a mystery. Being an engineer, its a quick sketch then on to AutoCAD (lazy, heheh).
Don't think to much, just look at the thing you want to draw, and start. Look more at the object/picture than what's your hand is doing.
Oh you're an engineer, in for what, if I may ask? (:
Fair do's - I'll try that, yeh normally I watch what I'm doing and get frustrated. I think that maybe a side effect of tech drawing though, you're taught to be exact and tbh not that flexible.
I'm a Materials Scientist/Engineer working in solar energy and catalysis for the moment - although that seems to change regularly,
Ah, cool.. Even though I'm not completely sure of what you're job includes, you must be one with a brain xD
